The Loreleis

UNC

The Loreleis is the premier, all-female a cappella group at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The group is named after the mythical siren on the Rhine River who lured sailors to their deaths with her enchanting voice. The Loreleis, a nonprofit organization active since 1981, perform for campus and community events, produce a new album every other year and tour nationally and internationally twice a year. The group’s repertoire includes contemporary pop, R&B, country and oldies.

Throughout the years, the Loreleis have won local and national acclaim. In 2009 the group’s rendition of “Jesusland” was selected to be on the Ben Fold’s compilation album University A Cappella. That same year, the Loreleis opened for Ben Folds during his visit to the Durham Performing Arts Center. In October 2004, the Loreleis sang the national anthem at Yankee Stadium during the second game of the American League Championship Series. They also performed a short concert for Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and actor and comedian Billy Crystal. While in New York, they visited Trump Towers, where they serenaded Donald Trump.

In 1996, the group won first place at the first-ever International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCAs) held at the Lincoln Center in New York City. In addition, in 2003 the group won first place at the first-ever SoJam, an a cappella competition featuring Eastern and Southeastern collegiate and professional a cappella groups. The Loreleis have also been featured on the CBS Sunday Morning show, NBC’s The Today Show and ABC’s Good Morning America, and have been guests on numerous North Carolina radio and television programs.
