During a trip to Jamaica over Spring Break in 2002, the Mates decided to give in to their urges and let some of their R&B and hip hop influences out. Bamboo is the result, and the Mates open the album with the soulful “Killing Me Softly,” which was selected for BOCA 2003, and was nominated for both Best Mixed Collegiate Song and won Runner-Up for Best Mixed Collegiate Soloist (Becky Rubin) in the 2003 CARA competition.
